The South River provides essential aquatic and riparian habitats for a diverse assemblage of native plants and animals. In the waters of the river and its tributaries any insects like dragonflies, damselflies, caddisflies and mayflies spend their aquatic larval stages provide food for fishes. Along the banks, swallowtail butterflies, skippers, and tiger beetles can be seen basking in the sunny openings. The rich soil of the South River’s flood plain provides the proper conditions for moisture loving plants like jack-in-the-pulpit, red buckeye, tulip poplar and rivercane.
