The DeKalb County consent decree went into effect over seven years ago and is due to expire in June 2020. During this period, the county has done almost nothing to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) that pollute the county's creeks, streams, and the South River. The number of SSOs remains high and the amount of sewage shocking. To eliminate this problem the county must do two things. First, fix its old and leaky sewer pipes which allow rain water to seep in causing overflows. Second, pass the proposed new ordinance that holds apartment complex owners accountable for addressing overflows caused by fats, oils, and grease (FOG) and privately owned sewer systems. Urge DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond ceo@dekalbcountyga.gov to take an active and visible leadership role in eliminating the county's SSO crisis. To raise public awareness notification of overflows that occur in the South River watershed will be posted to this page.
